Big News for Me and Smart Start Focus Walls for McGraw Hill Wonders 4th Grade

I have been holding on to this news since the last day of school because I didn't know how to announce it.  I am sure you have figured it out since I only make focus walls for first grade so why would 4th grade necessary.  Yes folks, I am moving up from first to fourth!  I am both happy and scared, nervous and exhilarated, and I am up to the challenge!

Now what to do with my blog name.  This has been on my mind since I got the news and I have decided that I am keeping Faithful in First because I have been faithful to first for pretty much all of my teaching career.  I am going to change the tagline to read: wishes, wonders, and wants of a fourth grade teacher.  If I become super popular in the future (wink, wink) I may change my mind, but for now my small following won't lose sight of me, lol.

So, since I am now only going to teach reading, language arts, and social studies I am already in planning mode.  I have finished the McGraw Hill Wonders Smart Start mini focus walls for 4th grade and they are in my TpT store as a freebie.  I have had so many great things said about my first grade focus walls (units 5 and 6 will be up in the next few weeks) that I decided to keep with tradition.  You can click the pics below and head on over to download the freebie.

Week One Smart Start 4th Grade

Week Two Smart Start 4th Grade

I am looking forward to learning more about 4th grade and even thought I am very nervous, I know it is going to be fabulous!  I would love advice from any 4th grade buddies, so please comment away with ideas and anything else you can help me with on this new journey.

  1. Congratulations on your move to 4th. I was always a Kinder and First grade teacher when I lived in Collier County, but quickly moved up to upper grades when I moved to Bay County. I always thought I was meant to be a primary teacher until I started going up. I LOVE big kids. You are going to be AMAZED at how much the kids can do and their independence. 4th grade is a great year. Selfishly I would love if you were teaching 5th because I'm eyeing those focus walls!! We are moving to Wonders this year and I haven't had any training yet. I'm a little nervous. We had Harcourt Storytown before, but I didn't use it a whole bunch. Can't wait to read more about your adventure.

    1. Allison,
Thank you for your words of support. I am beyond excited to be moving up. I have a feeling this will be "home" for me! Don't worry about 5th focus walls, as soon as I finish 4th, I will be working on 5th! Wonders is a great series, as long as you know the standards and how to teach them. Our series is, of course, CCSS, so it will be interesting to see how the LAFS changes things. Thank goodness there aren't many changes to the 4th grade standards.

Have a great end of summer!

  2. Good luck with your move! I'm doing the opposite, moving from fourth to first, and I am really going to miss the older kids!

    1. You will love the little ones, but I do think it is harder to move down. I have to say, I love 4th grade! I was nervous, but they get my sarcasm, lol! Have a great year, you will be fine.

    1. I was being selfish and wondering if you made the 5th grade smart start that you have listed. You mentioned it in another comment back in July. Our district just purchased the series and I am so overwhelmed with it. I don't even know where to begin! I wish you taught 5th!

As soon as I finish with 4th grade, I will move on to 5th. It will take a while, but keep checking and it should be there soon! Thanks for your kind words. 4th grade is kicking my a**, but I do love it!
