Florida Teacher Blog Hop July 25-27

Welcome to the Sunshine State! Enjoy yourself as you take a tour around our wonderful {and large!} state! Grab some freebies along the way, and be sure to enter to win our Bundles of Sunshine!

I live way down south in Kendall, Florida.

I was born in New York and my grandparents moved us down when I was 2 years old, so I am pretty much a native Floridian!  I grew up in Coral Gables and I have to say that was the best place to grow up, hands down.  George Merrick founded Coral Gables after the 1926 hurricane and his home is now a museum. If you want to read the history, just click on the link under the picture.

We then moved to Westchester, where I went to high school.  Once I was married in 1987, we moved to Kendall and it has been my home ever since.  Kendall is southwest of Miami Beach and 200 miles north of Key West.  We rarely get a chance to head on over to the beach, which is unfortunate.  I think we have only been twice this summer!
The area of Kendall that I live in is very close to the Miccosukee Indian Village.  There is a beautiful hotel and is known for its bingo hall.  I have spent many nights with my grandmother playing bingo, once we even won $10,000!

I found this poster on Facebook after someone had posted it, but could not find a copy of it anywhere.  I decided to make one of my own and share it with all of you.  There is a poster for primary grades and some of the wording was changed to make it more applicable.  The other poster is for intermediate grades.  I hope this is something you can use!

  1. Isn't Coral Gables where they have that awesome old pool with the grotto and fresh water?!? The Venetian Pool....maybe, can't remember the name. I had a birthday party there once. Beautiful!

  3. Love going to Kendall and Coral Gables when I'm in South Florida. I was born in Georgia, but only lived there a year...so I call myself a native Floridian too!

  5. Hi, Janine, we are neighbors! I also live in kendall, and pass by the Miccosukee Village all the time, although I've never played bingo there. However, after hearing about your winnings maybe I should go play... LOL!
I must tell you that I LOVE the Gables, but every time I drive through that area I think about how difficult and scary it must be to own a house there especially during hurricane season!
Thanks for sharing your freebie. It is adorable... I especially love the ending.

    1. Maybe we can have a blogger meet up at the village and we can all play bingo together! Hurricane season in the Gables isn't that scary, especially since many of the homes are made sturdier than the newer homes. The scary part is the ghost stories you hear about!

  6. HI! I teach in Homestead, but live in Cutler Bay. We are not too far from each other.
I love going to Gables. One of my favorite places to eat is Seasons 52.
    Thank you for the freebie!

  8. What an interesting place to live. South Florida has such beautiful vegetation because it doesn't have the cold winters we have in North Florida.

    1. I love the history of North Florida and I actually love the cold winters! Maybe we can switch, lol. The vegetation is beautiful, especially Fairchild Tropical Gardens. You should visit there if you get a chance.

  9. I grew up in Coral Gables. LOVE Miracle Mile...so many good memories. After college, I moved down for a year for my first teaching job and lived in Coconut Grove. Sometimes I miss it so much!! :)

    1. I lived a few blocks away from Miracle Mile, on Sevilla Ave. I spent almost every weekend on the Mile with my little sister. My mother would give me $5 and we would eat at Woolworths and then watch a movie at the Miracle Theater. Those were the days. I went to school in the Grove, St. Hugh, from 3rd to 8th grade. I loved growing up in such a great place.
