One of my biggest pet peeves is a messy student desk. I use desk fairy coupons, but there are still those who just can't get it together. I decided to make a simple poster to keep up in my classroom for students to check themselves daily before they leave. The subject names are the colors of their books so those who can't read, can just arrange by color. Hopefully this will keep them on track and my hair will have less gray, lol. I hope you can find some use for it as well.

I make a hand-written poster similar to this with my kids each year. I remake them depending on what we're using that year (ie next year we'll have new reading curriculum so that will change). It helps a lot!
